Working in Jackson Hole!

About Us
Togwotee Mountain Lodge (TML) is a year-round resort located in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. In the winter season (Dec.-April) we offer extensive snowmobiling, including extreme riding in the 2.5 million acres of land surrounding us with over 600 miles of groomed trails. We also provide Snow Cat Skiing, Dogsledding, and Yellowstone Snowmobile or Snow Coach trips. Several employees bring equipment to enjoy snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding in the National Forest. In the summer season (June-Sept.) we take advantage of the warmer weather with all types of outdoor activities. TML provides horseback riding onsite, ranging from one hour to full day beginner rides. Working with vendors in the Jackson Hole valley TML also books fishing, hiking, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, float trips, and covered wagon cookouts. Hiking opportunities are endless in this region with the Bridger Teton National Forest and Wind River Mountains out our front door, the Teton Wilderness out our back door, Grand Teton National Park located 15 minutes west and Yellowstone about 45 minutes from our location. Between our seasons—April-May & Oct.-Nov.—we rent our cabins at a discounted price for those people that are still out looking for the last of the powder, or those looking to enjoy the fall weather without the crowds. During this time we continue to employ a few housekeepers, maintenance and our management staff.

Location
Togwotee is located 16.5 miles east of Moran Junction and the North entrance to Teton National Park. We are an hour from downtown Jackson and 45 minutes from Yellowstone National Park and Dubois. The lodge sits at 8,600 feet elevation high above Jackson Hole nestled into the side of Angle Mountain.

History
In Mountain Crow language, "Togwotee" means 'from here you can go anywhere'.

Back in 1873, Captain Jones of the US Army Corp of Engineers recommended that a road be built over Togwotee Pass. The pass was named after the Shoshone Indian guide who scouted the area for Captain Jones.

Almost 50 years later the road crew arrived. Among the crewmembers were Al and Bertha Angle. Seeing a need for good home cooking, Bertha started making sandwiches and meals to sell to the road crew and any other passerby. When the road pass opened in 1921, Al and Bertha saw the possibility to build a permanent camp that featured comfortable lodging and home cooked meals.

The Angles received a 99 year lease from the Forest Service and built Angle’s Camp. They also acquired an outfitting permit and began guiding fishing and hunting trips into the Teton Wilderness. The Angles helped stock many of the lakes and trained many of the outfitters in Jackson Hole. Al used to say, "Well, anyway, a guide wasn't a tough mountain man till he'd been exposed to schooling at Angle's Camp".

The abundance of snow—over 600 in. annually—and the long winter season were the greatest source of troubles for the Angles. After 30 years of operation they sought a less strenuous way of life and sold their cherished business to Harry Moll.

Moll later sold to the Weideman family, who built the existing lodge. The lodge was completed in 1965 and was named Togwotee Mountain Lodge. The old Angle’s lodge, now the convenience store, was renovated and moved to its present location in 1982.

There were six owners of the lodge between the Weideman family and the current owner, Tom Chapman, who purchased it in the summer of 2002. Mr. Chapman purchased the lodge from long time owner Garry Cole, who had renamed it Cowboy Village Resort at Togwotee. Our new owner returned us to our roots and restored the name of Togwotee Mountain Lodge. The long winters, which caused the greatest problems for the Angles, have become the resort’s greatest asset. We are now the world’s premiere snowmobile destination.

Togwotee Mountain Resort's current goals are the same as Al and Bertha Angle's. When they built the lodge in 1923 it was their mission to provide good food, comfortable lodging, western hospitality and the activities to create a memorable vacation. We share that same mission today.
